Logistics Lowdown: Our October Newsletter
During my first month as Chair of the Beacon Council’s Trade and Logistics Committee, we made tremendous progress supporting the Trade and Logistics industry in South Florida. Presently, twenty-five percent of all employment in South Florida is associated with Trade and Logistics. We fully intend to grow that number over the next year. We are very proud of the industry and that we are able to support so many individuals and their families by providing an international hub for trade and logistics.
Based on the advice of the Beacon Council, the Miami-Dade County Schools have included more courses related to the Trade and logistics industry. Some of the participating schools include Doral High School, Ronald Regan High School and Edison High School. Miami Dade Community College also offers a degree program for Supply Chain Management; their first class graduated this past May!
Below are the Beacon Council’s most recent employment numbers to show the industries that are improving the South Florida economy.
- Miami-Dade added 15,000 jobs (1.3 %) from September 2015 to September 2016, please see below for the breakdown of increases:
- Construction sector 10.8%
- Financial activities sector 3.7%
- Professional service sector 3.5%
- The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Miami-Dade County was 5.2 percent. This is a 0.8 percentage point decrease from September 2015 at 6.0 percent.
We are very excited by these numbers and what potential they hold for the future of Miami-Dade County and all of South Florida.
